Dirtboard and Mountainboard Components
Dirtboards or mountainboards are similar to snowboards or skateboards. The obvious difference is they can be used offroad because of the bigger tires.
The Parts Of A Dirtboard
The Deck:
Dirtboard decks are the part that you stand on. They can be made from composite carbon or fiberglass with wood cores, to wood laminates. They are usually around 36″ – 40″ long and 7″ – 9″ wide and 1/2 in thick. The different materials they are made from account for different “stiffness” and pop the board will have. The ends of the board angle upward in degrees, called the nose angle, typically around 30 degrees.
The Trucks:
The trucks are used for the attachment of the axle and wheels to the deck.. The axle attaches to a part called the hanger. The parts that make up the truck is what allows the board to turn. There are 2 basic kinds of trucks, the skate truck and the channel truck.
Skate trucks are like skateboard trucks, they just have a bushing between the hanger and the axle, and the tension is adjusted by tightening or loosening the bushing with a bolt.
Channel trucks have a spring mounted between the axle and the wheel housing. Inside the spring is a damper called an egg shock which provides resistance when you lean into a turn and put your weight onto the axles. Unlike regular shock absorbers which dampen up and down force, the eggs only dampen downward force, not upward force.
Bindings:
Bindings hold your feet to the deck, basically a piece that tightens over the top of your foot and a heelstrap. These bolt to the deck. The different types of bindings are:
- Ratchet
- Velcro
- Snowboard
- Bar
Wheels and Tires:
The wheels are made of either plastic or aluminum hubs with an air filled tire and range from 8-13 inches. The tires come in a variety of treads, from slicks for street riding to knobby for off road.
Brakes:
Brakes are available for dirtboards, although most do not use them for various reasons. They are controlled via a hand held attached with a cable, and if you’re going through any brush the cable will tend to snag on the brush. But they do come in 4 types, which are similar to their counterparts on bikes.
- Drum
- Disc
- Hydraulic Rim
- V
Protection:
Dirtboarders can wear the same type of protection that are used by bmx’ers, skateboarders and snowboarders.
- Wrist pads
- Knee pads
- Helmets
- Elbow pads
- Body Armor
